Vintage Watch Condition Examination:
This Rolex Explorer is in overall great, attractive vintage condition consistent with its age. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear. The case number between the lugs at six o'clock is mostly rubbed away, and since we have the punched papers we can decipher it using a loupe. The reference number is mostly rubbed away too. We have seen this type of wear before, from the bracelet against the case over years of use. The Mark I "Frog Foot" dial is in great condition with light patina; it has some darker patina around the edge that can be hard to notice. The lume on the dial has aged to a lovely and even pale yellow color. The hands have developed patina and the lume in the hands has aged to pretty close color; the lume in the seconds hand is a bit lighter. The fold over Oyster bracelet is in overall very good condition with normal signs of wear; it has a bit of stretch between the links which is common for this type of bracelet.
Description: Vintage Rolex Explorer 1016 "Frog Foot" Dial
Rolex introduced the 1016 Explorer in 1959 and it was in production until 1989 making it one of the longest running produced references from the brand. At the beginning of the run Rolex made the dials glossy and then switched to the matte style around 1966. This example is circa 1972 and features a matte Mark 1 "frog foot" dial. This mark gets the fun nickname because of the coronet on the dial and how it looks like a frogs foot.
The lume on this example has developed a lovely pale yellow patina adding to the overall vintage charm. This also comes with it's box and punched papers which is always a bonus!
