Vintage Watch Condition Examination:
This Omega watch is in good, attractive condition. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear. The bezel is in great condition with light wear; it is a later service replacement. The flat dial is in great condition with light patina. The lume has developed patina and aged to a lovely yellow color. The minute hand appears to be a later service replacement. The bracelet is in great condition with normal signs of wear and some stretch between the links which is not uncommon for this style bracelet. The clasp has a slight indentation under the Omega symbol. The crystal is signed with the Omega symbol in the center.
Description: Omega Speedmaster 145.0022
The Omega Speedmaster is one of the most iconic timepieces in existence. The collection debuted in 1957 and would eventually outperform several other brands in a series of rigorous tests to earn the coveted title of the official watch of NASA and the distinction “Flight-Qualified by NASA for all Manned Space Missions.” Although the Speedmaster went to space in the early 1960s in an unofficial capacity, it was the Speedmaster with “Professional” written on the dial that would go on to accompany astronauts during the first Moon landing. The “Moonwatch,” as it has since come to be known, is one of the most sought-after Omega watches on the secondary market.
This model is a fascinating edition. Omega changed how it assigned reference numbers sometime in the 1980s, effectively replacing ref. 145.022 with ref. 145.0022. Interestingly enough, Omega kept engraving the case backs with the reference number 145.022 for several more years, like the vintage Omega for sale here. Hence, finding reference 145.0022s with a different number engraved on the case back isn't unusual. Furthermore, the Omega we have here is powered by the decorated gold caliber 863 hand-wound movement - an interesting detail considering it has a closed case back. As it often goes in watch collecting, these small details add to the story of a watch and make it all that more collection-worthy. This Omega has a lot going for it and offers collectors interested in buying an iconic Moonwatch a lot of value.
